One of my favorite places in Orange County is the Heritage Trail. When I first began working at Inspire, I was very excited that the trail would literally be in my backyard! I enjoy physical fitness and being outdoors; as soon as the snow melts and the sun is out, you can find me there walking, running, and bike riding. As the days began to grow warmer, I began thinking about the individuals that we serve here at Inspire. Are there places for them to get out and enjoy being healthy? How can we incorporate the community in our purpose of supporting individuals with special challenges?
One of the programs we have at Inspire is Community Habitation. This program matches individuals with a mentor to assist the individual with skill building both inside the home and out in the community. It can be a challenge for mentors to come up with activities in the community that do not feel monotonous. As a solution to this, I wanted to offer these individuals a free, routine activity that could involve any agency and any member of the community. I wanted this activity to be a place for individuals meet peers and build relationships.
So we came up with Abilities on the Move!
Abilities on the Move meets every Monday in the months of June, July and August between 4 and 5 PM. We start at the Heritage Trail in Goshen off of St. James Street. Everyone is welcome! We have marked out the trail with mile markers and upon completion participants get a key chain with their miles. Participants can walk, run or roll!
We are trying to spread the word about this program and, slowly but surely, participation is growing! Parents are bringing their children, mentors are bringing the individuals that they work with, and even a residential home came out with their clients! It’s so great to see their faces and see how excited they are to track the mileage week after week!
